Bottle Cap Mania!

Bottle Caps seem to be sweeping the nation. At the urge of my nieces, I've started making them and am having a ball doing so. Instead of adding them to ball chains and only being able to wear one style, I've decided to go the interchangeable route and put them on super strong magnets so that you can just pop one off and add another any time you want. My nieces store their extra caps on the fridge, which are great decoration, and that way they always know where they are.

Chokers are soft and stretchy and just slip on over your head. They'll fit anywhere from a 2 year old to an adult (but please supervise small kiddos while wearing).

Occupational Therapy Splints

One cool thing Occupational Therapists get to do is make all kinds of splints for various injuries to the shoulder, elbow, hand, and fingers. They can be quite tedious to form, especially when you're starting from scratch, but the perfectionist-artistic part of me loves it. The first splint pictured is what we would make for a patient that has had some sort of radial nerve injury that results in not being able to lift the wrist and fingers.

The second splint pictured here is probably one of the most common that we have to make. I especially get a lot of these working with older adults that may have had some sort of stroke, brain injury, or spinal cord injury that results in contractures of the fingers or wrists. Luckily for me with an increasingly larger caseload per day, some companies make pre-fabricated splints like this one and we just have to add the straps and heat them up for small adjustments to avoid pressure areas.

One very basic splint an OT can also provide is for the relief of tennis elbow. This basic splint pictured below provides pressure at the attachment of the muscle to divert the force to another area to allow the painful area time to heal while not having to work so hard.

April is National Occupational Therapy Month

This month is National Occupational Therapy month and is designed to raise awareness of the field of OT. I cannot tell you how many times I have to explain that "Occupational Therapy" has nothing to do with helping someone find a job. I thought I would post a general Press Release statement by the American Occupational Therapy Association as an explanation of what OT is. I'll be posting some other info about OT's throughout the month in hopes that someone will gain a better understanding of my field and what we do for our patients.

Occupational Therapy:
The Profession that Focuses on Life Skills

For millions of people, the service of occupational therapy is a lifeline. People of all ages receive it to help them participate in the activities of their daily life. Sometimes people need occupational therapy to do things we take for granted, like getting dressed, being productive at school or work, eating unassisted, even socializing.

Occupational therapy doesn't just treat medical conditions, it helps people stay engaged in the activities that give them pleasure or a sense of purpose, despite challenges.

Occupational therapists do this by helping people surmount their disabilities or medical conditions to do everyday things. The nature of the therapy depends on the individual and their environment; occupational therapists consider the whole person when developing a therapy plan. Occupational therapists collaborate with physicians and other professionals to ensure a comprehensive approach.

Children, for instance, sometimes have behavioral or developmental problems that limit their educational progress. Lawmakers believe occupational therapy is so important to the well-being of children, federal law mandates that schools must offer occupational therapy to children who need it.

Occupational therapy is "outcome-oriented," which means therapists help clients work toward achievable performance goals.

In rehabilitation clinics or hospitals, occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help adults learn or regain skills that allow them to do meaningful things like working, driving, shopping, even preparing a meal. All types of people need this kind of help everyday, from a worker injured on the job to a grandparent recovering from surgery or a stroke.

Occupational therapy helps avoid health problems, and makes it easier to live with them.

Consider our growing senior population: Healthier people are living longer lives. Occupational therapy research proves that keeping people active and healthy as they age will not only improve their quality of life, it will lower their health care costs as well. That is why there are occupational therapy programs focusing on wellness and prevention - to help seniors stay healthier and remain active in their homes and communities. Trained therapists can make homes safer for people with reduced mobility and failing vision. Occupational therapists can also teach seniors new driving techniques that will keep them behind the wheel longer, as safe drivers.

Occupational therapy addresses one of the most important aspects of rehabilitation and recovery - the return to a normal life.

Occupational therapy has its roots, a century ago, in helping war veterans return to life at home. These days, occupational therapists work in rehabilitation hospitals and on the front lines of combat. Some occupational therapy programs help soldiers recognize and relieve stress. In addition, occupational therapy helps soldiers learn to care for themselves after an injury, including helping them use artificial limbs.

In recognition of all the ways occupational therapy contributes to society's well-being, April has been designated as Occupational Therapy Month.

ETC: Giving Back to the Community

Today's artist comes from a family of makers and has been doing jewelry since she was a little girl (if making friendship bracelets is considered jewelry. She is originally from Germany, then settled in Massachusetts almost ten years ago.

Nursing Necklaces

I've posted about my nursing necklaces that was added to my Etsy shop and website a while back, but I thought I would add pics of a few more styles, as well as a way to purchase here from the Blog. (you'll find that over on the right-hand column).

As a mother of two small children (ages 1 and 2), and owner of a jewelry and craft business, I was always a little upset when I first had my babies that I never could wear my earrings or necklaces, or even bracelets because they would inevitably grab and pull really hard (you never know how strong babies are till you have one of your own), and I was always scared they would snap my jewelry and accidentally choke on a bead (my mind always went to worst case scenarios).

I began to make these necklaces out of my desire to have something "Sparkly" to wear that would also be safe for my kiddos to play with while they were feeding.

I call them "Nursing Necklaces" because that's how I used them, but they are perfect for bottle fed babies as well.

The pendant is made into a loop style that baby can grasp, and tied in a continuous piece of organza ribbon to prevent the beads from being able to fall off. These necklaces are not meant to be a replacement for a teether toy. Even though babies are small, they can bite down rather hard and accidents can happen, so please supervise when wearing.

The length of this necklace is approximately 20", which is a little longer than average, but long enough that baby can reach it. The ribbon makes it feminine and light weight, and suitable for everyday wear.

Today's feature is on the Etsy shop of Lazy Cat. This shop is actually the work of three talented artists-Allison, Stasia, and Kelly. They too got their mad skills from their grandmothers and now try to make their creations more modern to apply to today's fashions.

They enjoy using the skills from their grandmothers to create wonderfully hip and modern pieces. They crochet in both yarn and wire, creating artisan bead crochet jewelry, scarves, hats, etc. They are constantly looking for ways to expand crochet. Check out this first piece. My favorite necklace to make is my "Chelsea" necklace in my shop and on my website because it's combining my two favorite things-beads and crochet. I LOVE this necklace and how the aqua beads look on the copper wire. Very beautiful. They have several different looks in their shop to choose from.

99 Red Balloon Earrings

I've said over and over again that I am a child of the '80's, so how could I pass up featuring a darling pair of earrings called "99 Red Balloons". (aka 99 Luftballoons). This fine silver necklace and earring set was inspired by a combination of things:

The first is 1980’s protest song 99 red Balloons by Nena.
The second is the movie, “Le Ballon Rouge,” a short film directed by French film-maker Albert Lamorisse in 1956. This film follows the adventures of a young boy who finds a large, red balloon throughout the streets of Paris. In their wanderings around Paris, the young boy and the balloon encounter a gang of bullies, but tragedy is replaced by a magically happy ending.

This necklace and earring set feature features a hand sculpted cityscape with three city buildings and a red balloon made from sterling wire and red coral beads. I carved, sculpted, filed, sanded, and darkened this piece by hand.

This cute purse was made from the cover of an old LP! Strawberry Shortcake came back with a smash, and this purse totally celebrates that. The LP cover has been coated on both sides with a waterproof plastic, and has been sewn into a totebag with a solid black material for the outside and strap, with a fun, bright pink and white flower patten for the liner and the underside of the strap. The strap is short enough to wear over one arm, like a tote, but long enough to put over one shoulder and under the opposite arm like a messenger bag.

Nursing Necklace

I'm proud of my new item that I've posted in my Etsy shop and added to my website in the Baby Boutique section. It's really pretty necklace that can be worn while feeding baby to give him something to play with other than pinching your arm or pulling your hair, and keeps him focused at the same time. It's made with pretty organza ribbon and glass beads, and the loop is knotted in one continuous piece to prevent the beads from being able to break off.

The necklace is made in a little longer length than average (about 20") so that baby can reach it, yet it is still light to wear. It has a lobster clasp closure.

She is the light of her life and the inspiration for her jewelry, as she likes to help her work! Although she admits Irie isn't much help. I know what she means, my cat Cheerio loves to sit on my desk while I work and just stares at me like beads and/or crochet is ancient Chinese kitty torture. I have been making these darling little crochet onesies for a while now, but it always bothered me that I couldn't think of a good way to embellish them. I tried putting some Swarovski crystals across the front for a little "bling", but it just wan't enough for me. So, I found some scrap eyelash yarn laying around and edged a onesie I had made with it. VOILA!!! I love the results. The yarn I use for the onesies is already super soft, and now the eyelash yarn makes it so silky soft and adds that touch of sass I was going for. I am very proud of them now. Meet Joanna, she is a Canadian living in Belize, Central America and also a graphic designer. Woodworking and sign design is her newest crafting passion but art has been in her blood since birth.

I've always had a thing for frogs, so I love this little card. It is an original pencil crayon illustration of a red eye tree frog (Agalichnis callindyas). These frogs breed in isolated ponds in lowland forest habitats. It is drawn on watercolor paper and is signed and dated on the back.
Her signs are also wonderful. I love this one with the beach chair. I live near Galveston, TX and love the beach, so when I have my own beach house, I'll have to comission one to welcome my guests!!!

Meet Michelle Strader, aka Shoozles. It's a nick name that goes way back and stuck with her so now it is her company name. She is an artist/jewelry maker, former graphic designer mother of triplets. She has made all kinds of jewelry for over 18 years now, clay, poly clay, paper, plastic that includes shrink plastic and the friendly plastic kind but she thinks nothing compares to fusing glass.

Of the 18 years in jewelry she has fused glass for 8 of those years now, and never gets tired of creating ART for people to wear. I just happened to be on the page when Treasury "reload" came around. I live in a very HOT area, and can't wait until I can bust out my sweaters and boots. My husband and I love to ski, which makes me think of ice and all the shades of blue that can come with it, so I was inspired to choose these items this time around. Yaslani was born and raised on the Jersey Shore and then moved to Los Angeles where she studied Fine Art -Painting at Otis Art Institute. Before long she found herself back in New Jersey where she detoured from art for a while and settled into a normal life fully stocked with a corporate job. Turns out she wasn't cut out for normal. Making things for her is an addiction. A packrat by nature, she believes all items have a second life and loves using recycled items and supplies that are gentle to the environment.

Her work consists of bamboo pendants and mixed media paintings. She uses found objects, bamboo, ephemera, old paper, acrylic, goauche, pencils, pens, ink, glitter… and anything else within her grasp. She is influenced by pop culture, color, music, animals, fashion, movies, magazines and too many artists to mention. There are no heavy messages in her work. She consider her art to be an aesthetic conversation, or a lovely chat between friends sometimes relaying a story or an inside joke. The only judgement she makes with her art is “am I feeling this or not.” The “not” pile gets recycled for another day.

Yaslani is the brainchild for all her creative outlets. There is so much more she plans to do. There are so many more beautiful conversations she plans to have and is still planning her escape from normal. Stay tuned.

Linda has taught classes both locally and around the country in a variety of jewelry skills, including wire wrapping and weaving, metalsmithing and glass fusing. Linda is a (PMC) Precious Metal Clay and Art Clay certified teacher.

From wire wrapping to goldsmithing, Linda possesses a wonderful blend of creativity and curiosity. Her work has been seen in several publications, including The Wire Artist Jeweller magazine, in which she was the featured artist of the month (November, 1999). Her work has also been included in the published book, "All Wire Up" by Mark Lareau. Co-Author and Jewelry Artist of "Woven Wire Jewelry" and "Getting Started Making Jewelry". She also holds a degree in computer graphics.

She has been a vendor on Etsy for well over a year and finds it a welcome change from The traditional Art Show scene that she spent many years taking part in. She feels that Etsy is a wonderful and lucritive avenue in which to share your designs, meet fellow artisans, and share tips and techniques.

Karen Copeland definitely has a passion for sewing! Meet Marcy Lamberson, a glass artist who loves making people smile through my whimsical beads and sculptures. She makes her glass beads with glass from Murano, Italy. I was in Venice a few years back and got to see some of the glass blowers in action. It is truly an amazing art. I would love to have the torch to be able to do lampwork one day like Miss Marcy!! It is truly an art.

Marcy teaches private and group lessons (too bad I'm not in the Atlanta area) and enjoys taking on custom commissions. While working out of her sunroom studio overlooking her garden and birds, squirrels, chipmunks and occasional wandering possums, she sometimes just decides to capture them into little beads! She also makes them wear clothes and jewelry when turning them into little fun glass pieces. Marcy states "There's nothing like a hippo being dressed up in a skirt, earrings and necklace or a bumblebee with a pirate patch."

Today's featured artist is jewelry designer Pippit Carlington. She developed an interest initially in making art furniture, but there was no facility or classes close to her over 23 years ago. She then started looking for smaller things to make using wood and began experimenting with slabs of pressure-treated pine. She found that the contrasting grain made very pretty jewelry when carved into shapes, and started making only earrings and selling them on the street.

As you can see by her designs, she "branched out" (get it!!) and began learning beadweaving, then metalwork, and began experimenting to come up with new designs combining all these techniques learned along the way.

Inspired by nature, texture, and her surroundings, she states "I see a bug and say to myself, 'Now that would make a neat pendant, or a fancy carved light fixture', and think, 'Now that would be beautiful to make a mold of and use for the surface of a ring!'". You never know what's going to evolve with her!

Her designs are made with setting stones on silver or gold, and most recently she has really been excited about working in copper and in precious metal clay. In some of her lines she also use seedbeads and fiber, and of course she still likes wood as long as it's high-end; not the really cheap OT kind of wood, but the more upscale, particularly exotic woods that are polished or sanded to a very smooth finish such as ebony.

Bridgette and Mike of E.I. Greetings have been "creating a little happiness" for about 5 years now. Their business got started by accident, even though she was going to college for graphic design. Bridgette came across a girl on a wedding message board (while planning her own wedding in 2002) that needed help with her invitations, so she offered to help, free of charge, but the girl liked them so much she paid her! Ginny Headley Maserang is the artist behind That's Headley! Jewelry Designs. She got "started" making jewelry in junior high with the good 'ol seed bead daisy chain chokers. Times changed, and she moved on from seed beads to semi-precious stones. Her business started with her husband told her to "sell or stop buying". (Hey-sounds familiar-I think my husband told me the same thing!!). She did just that and began having her jewelry sold via arts and antiques shows, and finally found Etsy and opened her shop in March 2006.

She is constantly inspired by the materials she works with, especially the colors and textures of semiprecious gemstones and sterling silver. She states "I love how they feel against the skin and pick up your body's warmth and energy." There's not much else that can compare to a beautiful piece of jewelry that just has some "weight to it".

Her beautiful and intricate designs won in the Etsy Spring 2007 Beads4You Challenge in the Anything Goes category. This is the gorgeous bracelet pictured above!! New Green Jewelry

I love the greens that are out for fall. I've gotten a few pieces made, and have posted them in my Etsy shop, and will be getting a lot more things made for fall in the next weeks.

This next necklace I have added to my homepage as the "Allyne" necklace and has the tiger eye beds on one, and the second one has golden jade gemstone pebbles. I love this pendant because it looks like it's just "floating". They are also available in my Etsy shop. Both of these stones are great for fall.

Bird's Nest Ring

This is such a fun little ring to make. It looks like three little bird's eggs "nestled" in a nest! They are listed in my Etsy shop. Each one is wire-wrapped by hand and will be just slightly different...I like to say they are "organic"--that's my favorite crafty description. I think it's a way for folk to say something may look slightly wonky than the other.

I've gotten a hole of some pretty agate stones and decided to make some necklaces and bracelets. They're posted in my Etsy Shop. These stones were just a pretty mix, so these are one of a kind. Once they're gone, they're gone. I can get similar stones, but each piece will be a bit different!!
